Pasar Besar Kedai Payang - Terengganu's Own Central Market

Pasar Besar Kedai Payang is a must-visit in your checklist especially for the first-time visitors to this blessed state. Located in Kuala Terengganu, by the Terengganu River facing the South China Sea, this double storey market is divided into wet market and shopping arcade.

The wet market offers visitors a variety of grocery items to purchase - from fresh fruits, vegetables, fish to local delicacies and snacks such as keropok.

What will Terengganu people do without keropok?

Dates for Ramadhan

On a more serious note, I am so devastated and dissapointed to see turtle eggs are sold all over the market. I wish people would stop buying them and locals would stop stealing more turtle eggs. This is one of the reasons why there are less turtles in the sea! These turtles are critically endangered. Everytime you want to buy these eggs, remember Puteri Rantau Abang. If there is no demand, then there would be no supply, it is as simple as that.

Traditional products and souvenirs like batik, brassware, brocade and songket are sold mainly on the second floor. Remember to bargain with the sellers and you will have a delightful experience shopping in local fares at reasonable prices.

My mum and I usually went to the market a week before eid to buy grocery. Do not wait until the last moment or you will suffer. A day before raya, this market must be avoided at any cost! It will be impossible to buy anything as people from all over Terengganu will come to shop. It will be so packed that you can't even breathe in there!

This market is definitely an iconic building in Terengganu. Your visit to this state will be incomplete without a trip to this market by the river.
